What is Encaustic Painting? Encaustic Painting is a wonderful process using pigmented beeswax based paint that is kept molten on a heated palette, like a hot plate. The wax is applied by brushes or other tools to the painting surface. (I use plywood) Once the wax has been applied to the painting surface, it is reheated (I use a hair-dryer) in order to fuse the paint to an enamel-like finish.
*I was only able to use this process for one year in college (2001-2002). However, I really enjoyed it and hope to have my own encaustic set one day. It's a lot more expensive than my current processes, but when you step back and look at what you've created... it's marvelous! Moving the wax around with the heat of the hair dryer creates wonderful nuances.... happy accidents. I'll get back to it! It's too much fun not to.
